The center serves the community of Valencia by collecting blood from donors and supplying blood products to hospitals for the treatment of patients.
It was founded in 1985 (Valencia), added locations in 1987 (Alicante) and 1992 (Castellon) to further support the community’s needs for blood, and later incorporated an organ and tissue bank and an umbilical cord blood bank.
Dr. Cristina Arbona
Director of the Transfusion Center of the Valencian Community
Cristina Arbona is a specialist in Hematology and Hemotherapy and a lecturer in multiple health and university training courses.
She was the head of the blood bank and therapeutic apheresis unit at the Hospital Clínico Universitario of Valencia from 1994 to 2015.
She participated in numerous competitive projects, and is the author of more than 60 research articles. Lines of research includes: Mobilization and apheresis of hematopoietic progenitors, Therapeutic apheresis. Immunohematology. Transfusion of blood components and transplantation of cells and tissues: procurement, processing and storage. Donation of blood and blood components.
Dr Arbona is a member of the board of directors of the Spanish Society of Hematology and Hemotherapy.
Dr. Luis Larrea
Head of the Processing Department at the Valencian Transfusion Center
Luis Larrea was born in Bilbao, where he studied medicine. In 1996, he completed his training in hematology and hemotherapy as a resident at Hospital la Fe in Valencia. He graduated as a Doctor from the University of Valencia in 2000.
Since 1998, Dr. Larrea has served in various roles at Centre de Transfusió de la Comunitat Valenciana (Valencian Transfusion Center) and is currently Head of the Processing Department. He works with various European institutions, such as the European Council and the European Blood Alliance (EBA). He is also a member of the current board of the Sociedad Española de Transfusión Sanguínea (Spanish Society of Blood Transfusion).
